East Area Adult School  Needs volunteers to help with the English as a Second Language Program. Volunteers will be tutoring adult education students working on their English skills.  Locations are here in Haines City at Eastside Elementary and St. Anne's Catholic Church in the evenings.  For more information please contact Sharon Kelsey at the East Area Adult School (863) 965-5567.

Rebuild Polk After Disaster (R.P.A.D.)  Did you know there are hundreds of disaster victims right here in Polk County, still in need of some type of assistance following the hurricanes of 2004?  It is difficult to drive for more than a couple of minutes without seeing roofs covered in blue tarps. 
These are just a remind to us that the work goes on.  The needs are still unmet in many areas. 
If you are in need of our services, or know someone that may be in need, call 863-294-4413 for assistance.  Now for you volunteers!  Here is a way to get involved!  
Current volunteer opportunities available are:

clerical, tree and brush removals / roofers /laborers /electricians /estimators /plumbers /AC repair/ carpenters /masons/painters/drywall finishers/and general construction.  Even if you are unskilled, you are able to help remove debris from the worksite.  All hands are needed to rebuild Polk County!  Call the number listed above or email rpadinfo@tampabay.rr.com or visit their office at 3580 Recker Hwy, Suite 2, Winter Haven, FL  33880, 8:30 am  to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Polk County Teen Court - Teen Court is a juvenile prevention program for first-time offenders who have committed a misdemeanor offense, and is based on the philosophy that juveniles judged by a true jury of their peers are less likely to continue their unlawful behavior. It is truly a valuable learning experience for those students who serve as volunteer attorneys, clerk, bailiffs, and jurors, while being given valuable insight into the legal system and the inner workings of a courtroom. Any student enrolled in grades 9 - 12 may volunteer in Teen Court.  Must maintain satisfactory grades and have a clean academic record.  Volunteers must attend sessions regularly and are required to sign and abide by Teen Court Oath of Confidentiality and Release Agreement. Community service hours are awarded.  Applications in the Career Lab and in the Criminal Justice Academy.  There is a LIMITED TIME for enrollment into this program.  IF you are interested, sign up NOW or you will not be able to sign up again until next school year. Mandatory training is on 9/26/05.

Eastside Elementary PTO  They need students who are willing to commit, show up, and help for all types of activities.  Times are after school, early evening, and on Saturdays. Flexible selection of dates/times to help you develop organizational skills, business skills, and express yourself artistically.  Contact Mrs. Roberts in the Career Lab for the dates/times/types of  events for the entire year!  High school students or approved volunteer adults  are welcome to join in the festivities at Eastside Elementary at 1820 East Johnson Avenue, Haines City, FL 33844.

Volunteers Improving Polk 

Florida State Parks - Volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs at Lake Kissimmee State Park in Polk County.  

Interested in a Health Career?  Why not volunteer at one of the area's hospitals?  They are always looking for responsible young volunteers and this would allow you to see what the work atmosphere is REALLY like. See links below:  

AmeriCorps Polk Reads  Help Wanted:  Enthusiastic, dedicated adults (2004 graduates or older) seeking professional development and personal satisfaction. Qualifications must include good communication skills, patience, reliability, flexibility, and a desire to help youth.  If this sounds like you, then you'll want to become an AmeriCorps  member. 

Volunteer Match - Find a site near you that needs your help.  Search for opportunities for teens.

Polk County SPCA - Opportunities to serve throughout Polk County.

Ridge Youth Soccer Club - Volunteers needed for field set-up, chalking fields, sideline referees, and snack bar help for EVERY game.  You will be trained and adult-supervised!  Can even lead to paid coaching jobs.  Must be 14 years or older.  Games are held at Four Corners Elementary in Northeast Polk County.  Also need helpers on the following dates:  September 10th "Opening Day", September 24th "Picture Day", December ? "Last Day" and the end of the year party, date TBA. Earn community service hours and have fun at the same time!

Bethune Neighborhood Center, 915 Avenue E, Haines City - The Northeast Archive Committee needs volunteers to provide time and effort for construction of picture frames and display cases for their collection of historical artifacts of the Old Oakland School and Northeast Community of Haines City. All materials will be provided by the committee and this mission will be on-going.  Call 863-421-3720 for more information.

Historic Bok Tower Sanctuary needs volunteers to help clean up light debris.  Must be 18 years or older, have photo ID.  Look for "Bok Bulletin" on website for more details.

HUD - Local opportunities

Friends of Baynard House - Established as a way for supporters to contribute time, talents and resources to the continued refurbishment and use of historic Baynard House.  Volunteers may serve as tour guides, donate collectibles or family heirlooms to be displayed at special events and assist in coordinating projects and functions.

Genesis Zoological Center, Inc. - Wildlife rehabilitation facility.  Volunteers needed to clean, mow, carpenter, etc.  Donations of building materials, food and other items also needed.  863-965-8706, 682-3020, 858-8627.

Integrated Health Services - Need persons to visit with elderly people who live in the facility and to help with activities.  863-967-4125.

Polk Environmental Education Resource Center - Needs volunteers to assist with trail clean-up, gardening, exhibit maintenance, general office work, and docents.  863-965-5479.

Winter Haven/Auburndale Adult Literacy Council - 863-293-0559 - Those with great reading skills can volunteer and tutor adults who are learning to read.
