Parenting
Skills (85003000) The purpose of this course is to prepare
students for the multiple roles essential to becoming a model parent and to
understand the dual roles of males and females as parents and wage earners.
This course will also enhance their abilities to assist children to become
effective citizens in a multicultural and technological society. Some
topics include parenting roles and responsibilities; nurturing and
protective environments for children; positive parenting strategies;
effective communication in parent/child relationships; multicultural
diversity and trends in technology.
Child Development (85003100)
This course prepares
students to understand the nature of child development from prenatal care
through age six, and the function and significance of the parenting
experience. The content includes basic needs of children, principles
of human development, prenatal care, the birth process, responsibilities of
parents and the role of communication and guidance in parent/child
relationships.
Family Dynamics ( 85003450) The purpose of this course is to
prepare students for the roles, responsibilities and relationships essential
to functional families and to understand the nature, function, and
significance of human relationships within family and individual units.
Students will learn the role and importance of the family; skills in
preparation for successful adult and family life; the family life
cycle; skills to build and maintain healthy family relationships;
current issues that create stress and conflict within the family unit.
Nutrition and Wellness ( 85003550) The purpose of this course
is to prepare students to understand the relationship between nutrition and
wellness. The program also provides for selection, preparation, service and
storage of foods. It allows students to use technology to practice meal
management techniques directed toward nutritional food choices based on the
life cycle. This course will provide an awareness of consumer issues
relating to health and wellness.
Early Childhood Education
I (85032110) This first level of Early Childhood Education covers
the 10 and 20-hour competencies for the Department of Children and Families
and general competencies for initial employment. Students will acquire
competence in the state rules and regulations; clean, safe and healthy
learning environments; food service and nutrition education; and child abuse
and neglect.
Early Childhood Education
II (85032120) Prepares students to plan and develop
appropriate lessons, develop and use observational, organizational, and record-keeping
skills. Students will acquire competence in developmentally appropriate activities
for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school age children to age eight and
special needs children. This course prepares students to become preschool
teachers.
Early Childhood Education
III ( 85032130) During this third level of Early Childhood
Education, students are given hands-on training with programmed dolls.
Students will acquire competence in the areas of child development theories,
current trends and issues, legislation, heredity, classroom management,
developmentally appropriate curriculum and environments, multiculturalism,
and teacher resource files. Students will further develop their skills of
becoming a preschool teacher.
Completion of this program will allow the
student
to be eligible for the Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award (GSV) if
they meet all other requirements.
Early Childhood Ed Internship ( 85004100) This is the culmination of the
Early Childhood Education. This course offers the opportunity to work in the
field to get hands-on experience.
Student, teacher, and employer develop a training plan for skills and tasks
to be learned on the job. The student will learn to perform designated job
skills and demonstrate work ethics.
Teacher
Assisting 1 (89090100) This course is designed to develop
competencies related to the role, regulations, and career path of teacher
aides; the role of education; leadership, interpersonal and communication
skills; and educational-support tasks.
Teacher
Assisting 2 (89090200) This course is designed to develop
competencies in the operation of audiovisual equipment; job-related math
skills; test administration and grading; job-related computer applications;
visual-aids preparation; the supervision of student health and safety; and
the reporting of child abuse and drug abuse. It also requires a teaching
practicum experience that involves direct student contact.
Teacher Assisting 3 (89090300) This course is designed to
develop competencies related to supporting the learning activities of
students, establishing and maintaining appropriate student behaviors, and
supporting cooperative home-school relationships. It develops competencies
in employability skills and entrepreneurship. It also requires the
completion of the teaching practicum experience that involves direct contact
with students. Upon completion of this certificate program, students are
employable in the Polk County School District if other requirements are met.
Completion of
this program will allow the student to be eligible for the Florida Gold Seal
Vocational Scholars Award (GSV) if they meet all other requirements.
